Children Crayon
Life-like Self Portraits with Crayons
CrayonByNumber 3.0, a CD-ROM
available from Wentworth Institute offers a
novel approach to incorporating
photography into your class's curriculum.
Photographs (either directly from
a digital camera or a scanned photograph) are
selected into the software. Then
with a few key strokes, the photographs are
processed into black & white,
numbered outlines (á la paint-by-number). Using
the printer, the youg artist
prints out the outlines as well as aCrayon/Number
Key.
The child then spends the next
2-3 hours CRAYONING in the outlines "by the
numbers" to render life-like
self portraits.
Granted, this art form may be
frowned upon by arists - however, it does in fact
spur an interest in art that
might otherwise have lain dormant. One
teachers
approach was to collaborate with
the Yearbook advisor to scan each child's
photograph. She then distributed
the CrayonByNumber outlines to her pupils
without informing them as to what
the content was. Needless to say, the children
were quite shocked when they
discovered that the drawing they were working on
was materializing into their own
visage!
Fundamental art/photography
concepts are readily worked into a lesson plan,
viz.
Perspective, Post-Impressionism,
Color theory, etc. If children, themselves, use
the software - they will quickly
note just how few colors are needed to render a
passable image of someone's face.
One interesting facet of
CrayonByNumber is that it melds new technology
(software/photography) with the
more traditional art form of painting thereby
illustrating to children that
although art is not immutable, the basics can be
applied
over and over.
