Installation
Requirements - PC running
Windows 95, 500 mB disk space, Monitor capable of
displaying High Color (16 Bit) or better, Black
and White Printer. Although a scanner is not
required, to get the full use out of this
software - you will need a color scanner
Installation steps:
1. Insert CD. The setup program should start
immediately.
2. If the setup doesn't automatically start, run
D:\setup.exe (assuming D: is your CD drive)
3. Follow directions displayed by the setup
program.
Trouble?
Depending on machine settings, you may not be
able to install software on your machine. If you
have trouble, verify this is not the case by
contacting your PC administrator.
Verify that your CD drive is working properly -
can you read any files included on the CD? - If
not, you may need to get your CD drive repaired.
Do you have enough space? Verify that the drive
you are trying to install to has enough space (1
mB)
Scanning Requirements
When scanning in photos, use the following
settings:
At least 150 dpi (both horizontal and vertical)
Color (Not Black and White)
To speed things up, set the scanning region to
trim off non-essential parts of the photo.
Adjust the Brightness/Contrast to get a pleasant
picture.
Problems opening GIF files.
This program does not open compressed GIF
files. If you want to download a GIF file from
the web, you will need to save the GIF file as
another format before you can open it with Crayon
By Number. (ie. as BMP format). You may use your
browser or a separate graphics program to convert
the image to a BMP file.
Running the Program.
(Required) Acquire the photo by
either:
1. Scanning in a photo - Select
File|Scan In.
2. Opening an image file - Select File|Open.
3. Paste a previously copied image - Select
Edit|Paste.
(Optional) Crop the non-essential regions
away:
Use the left mouse button and drag the
area you want to crop.
Repeatedly do this step until you are satisfied
with the region.
Select Edit|Crop.
(Optional) Enter the Description:
Select Edit|Insert Description
Enter amplifying/descriptive comments
(Description of subject, Artists name, date of
photo, etc.) These comments will be printed out
with the drawing.
(Optional) Select Crayon Box
Select your crayon box from the
drop-down box in the toolbar. This is the box of
crayons you will be using for the drawing - Note
The crayon names change from time to time... The
names of the crayons are the currently available.
(Required) Reduce the colors
To create a workable drawing, your
selection must be fairly low - 50 is probably too
high... try a level of 30 - 40 to start out with.
Reduce colors by tweaking the Reduce Colors
slider in the toolbar.
(Optional) Adjust Hue/Brightness
Select Edit|Advanced|Adjust Colors
Use this option if the original photo was too
dark/bright or had an improper hue. The 2 sliders
can be tweaked to improve the picture.
(Optional) Adjust Coarseness
Select Edit|Advanced|Set Coarseness
Use this option to adjust how defined you want
the picture -
increasing the coarseness will reduce the
definition, however, it will make it easier to
crayon.
(Required) Process
Select Edit|Process
Depending upon your machine's speed, this could
take up to a minute.
(Optional) Print
Select File|Print
(Optional) Save
Select File|Save
Choose location and name from the dialog box.
You may only save files in the CBN format.
